For the attention of the Technical Principal of the Dept. interested, Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Road, Derby. 26th February, 1929. Dear Sirs, FILTRATION OF PETROL, OIL, AIR AND DIESEL OIL. For over ten years we have been searching for suitable filtering media in connection with our work as Chemical Engineers. Whilst we have made various types of ceramic tiles, which have offered certain possibilities, there has really been no satisfactory filtering media produced. We are now able to offer what will be a very great improvement on anything hitherto obtainable, which is not of ceramic nature, although it retains the best properties which were aimed at in ceramic construction, and that is a silicious ooze fixed at a high temperature with a silica gel on a new method of manufacture. This patent material has been found to have the following properties. 1. We can make it so fine that the particles do not stick to the surfaces and therefore easily cleaned and even self cleaning filters may be prepared. 2. More effective filtration than that of any other media may be produced. 3. The rates of filtration may be varied to suit the customer's requirements. 4. The material is enormously strong. Tubes about 2 feet long in one piece of great practical strength and of several inches diameter can actually be made. As the cups used in filtering petrol and oil are relatively small, only a few square inches of area, it will be seen that the material is sufficiently tough and strong to withstand vibrational conditions most satisfactorily. Multi cup effects are utilised for filtering air and these may be put in with confidence. We should like to file this as it might be needed on Diesel work [Stamp:] RECEIVED 27 FEB 1929 | ||
