RE N. SCHEME 538 - SIDE PETROL FILLER
40/50 H.P. CHASSIS.

[STAMPED: RECEIVED 30 AUG]

Referring to the above scheme, would you kindly note that Mr. Royce would like the following small points to receive attention:-

(1) The features for turning the cap should be of elliptical shape and smaller, as marked in pencil on the attached blue print N. scheme 538.

(2) Provide a groove in the large male thread so that the air in the tank can leak away after the cap is loosened, and while it [handwritten annotation: (the cap)] is being unscrewed.

(3) Make the handle approximately 1/4" lower, and the screwed boss for the handle should be lengthened so as to be only .200" clear when the handle is at the bottom of its stroke. This will provide more thread, which Mr. Royce requires. The handle should be made in two pieces, the stem being of Delta metal and the handle itself being a brass pressure casting.
The handle should be a force parallel fit on the stem against a collar of smaller diameter. After forcing on, the handle should be half pinned to the stem by a parallel pin which should be held in position by rivetting over some metal round the hole.

(4) The drain pipe should be made larger. Mr. Royce thinks .375" outside diameter, so as to be of sufficiently big vent, not easily stopped up, and not easily damaged.

(5) The fitting for connecting the vent pipe to the tank should be made with a large vertical hole and boss, which could be left with a cast finish, and provide ample space for the drilling and tapping operations to run into for the union thread - see pencil marks on blue print.
The boss for the union should be considerably shortened by cutting a large flat on one side of the flange, as shewn by the pencil line AA.{D. Abbot-Anderson} If it is found necessary to use the alternative scheme for holding the petrol filler, then the central set bolt should be in Delta metal.
