Hairpin spring and clutch bolt fatigue with proposed design changes.

We assume that the hairpin springs are set in a period at this speed, andtogether with the natural tendency of the clutch fingers to fling outwards, cause a period of vibration of the bolts which eventually fatigues and breaks them. This will occur more quickly on the bed by longer periods of time being run at the periodicity of the hair springs.

From these tests, we should like to try stronger hairpin springs to bring the period nearer to the maximum revs.

In future, the clutch trunnion shaft should have a minimum clearance of .040" between the nuts of the lever bolts and the shaft.
