L. Edwards}/AUTO 11th February 1936 Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited, DERBY Dear Sirs, MOBILOIL "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" We thank you for your letter of the 31st ult., reference Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}20/KW concerning the use of Mobiloil "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" in the back axles of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. We understand that our Mr. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Russell Sharp discussed this matter with you on the 4th instant, and we give below some notes which will perhaps, explain the present position more clearly. The original Mobiloil "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" which you tested on the road in a Bentley car, and which gave rise to certain deposits was designed for an extremely high "extreme pressure" effect, and as a consequence, it was not entirely stable, as the formation of deposits referred to proved. Mobiloil "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" has been modified subsequently, in a number of ways, and the mineral oil and compounds now used in it have been chosen so that there is no tendency for any kind of separation or formation of deposits even after prolonged use, and the result is a lubricant which is entirely stable over very long periods. You will probably agree that the test recently carried out by Ransome & Marles Ltd., has demonstrated this point very effectively. The modifications to the oil have reduced the extreme pressure value to a certain extent, but our experience shows that the original product had an unnecessarily high factor of safety. The present product has been used very widely on all kinds of application, and we have no hesitation in saying that it would adequately meet any commercial purpose. We are very glad to note that you are putting in hand a test of Mobiloil "EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}" and anticipate that the results will be all that you desire. UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE ALL OILS ARE QUOTED AND INVOICED PER UNIT GALLON OF 9 LBS. AND ALL QUOTATIONS ARE WITHOUT ENGAGEMENT. | ||
