X1229 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}20/KW. 31st January, 1936. The Vacuum Oil Co.Ltd., Caxton House, Westminster, LONDON, S.W.1. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter reference B1/MSD of the 30th inst. Our original test of your EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} oil in a Bentley rear axle caused it to be condemned because of the sludge formed in the axle casing. Also, during the test run on a pinion bearing the amount of sludge formed was excessive. The test recently carried out on the Ransome & Marles bearing rig on your behalf shows that no sludge was formed. From this test it is obvious that the present oil is not the same as the oil we tried originally, and therefore we do not know whether it possesses the necessary extreme pressure properties. We are not in a position at the moment to carry out the extensive testing we have found to be necessary before recommending an oil for use in a hypoid axle. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
