COPY. RE ANALYSIS OF BUMPING TEST - R1/P29614. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} for. R.{Sir Henry Royce} 1.7.14. Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/G1714. (b). It was discovered in the Experimental Shop that if the leather packings were left out from underneath the spring, the life of the belt was much prolonged. Mr. Haldenby confirms this. When correcting for steering wobbles it was found that this leather interfered with the correct inclination being permanently obtained, and so it was instructed to be left out when the correction was made. I suggest that in this way we are now giving the spring bolts the necessary increase in strength. I am very much afraid that any increase in diameter might cause the spring to break, as this is now its weakest place. (c). The only cross steering arm known to break on the road is one on C.H.Angas car, which had done 100,000 miles over Australian roads. The dies have been altered and the strengthened lever could of course, be early obtained, if it is thought advisable, though the danger of fracture seems rather remote.
