AXLES (Strength tests)

Written by Mr Royce on March 12th 1912.

Handed to T.C. March 14th 1912.

Mr Royce said -

Special extra long heavy road springs should be fitted to a chassis and the axle lifted against the spring, the sphere being held stationary.
Test should be made with the old type axle for comparison.
After all such tests, none of the parts should be again used for production or go on the road, but should be scrapped.
This test should be carried out on a good hard foundation of concrete or on an iron plate.
Test should be repeated until the weakest place is found. This part should then be strengthened and others lightened, the theory being that all should fail together.
