AXLES Written by Mr Royce on March 12th.1912 Handed to T.C. on March 14th. Mr Royce said - Our standard axle now appears too large and heavy. Before reducing it we must however make definite strength tests to know exactly what they will stand before such an alteration is standardized. Strength should be definitely tested by practical experiment. Front axle should rest on the ground and the back of the car under full load be raised from the axle in stages of, say, 4 ft and allowed to drop. Motor driven bollard should be used with hemp rope and the car lifted against the stop. This test should also be carried out with the old type axle for comparison. After these tests none of the parts should be used again for production or to go on the road but should be scrapped. X339 | ||
