4 SPEED GEARBOX. X5310

The following telegram from R.{Sir Henry Royce} was re-transmitted from Derby to A.J.B.:-

"MR. ROYCE TELEGRAPHS AS FOLLOWS:-
* JUST RECEIVED NEW BELSIZE DESIGN
* SHOULD BE ADDED TO FIRST AND REVERSE
* PINIONS SO STRENGTH AND LENGTH
* TAPER ON SIDE SHAFT FOR LESS OVERHANG
* TOP AND THIRD. PREFER SLEEVE TO BE
* THREAD INTERNAL AT EACH END SPLINES AND
* SHAFT OK. ROYCAR. DERBY."

We are therefore sending you herewith drawing Loc. 2007 (print to R.{Sir Henry Royce}) showing the modifications that R.{Sir Henry Royce} has asked for in the above telegram, and in addition to which we have added one tooth to the 2nd. speed which we think Mr. Royce will consider advisable on inspecting the diagram herewith, which shows:-

(1) Gear ratios for G.2.

(2) Gear ratios resulting from additional teeth as asked for by R.{Sir Henry Royce} in the India 4 speed box.

(3) The ratio obtained on 2nd. speed by the addition of an extra tooth on the India four speed box, which we suggest is desirable.

Referring to Loc. 2007, this shows the additional teeth in the gears mentioned above, also the screw thread on sleeve arranged internally on this part. The pitch of this thread is .150" and in adopting this we can dispense with the hole for circular feeler as asked for in AJB1/B24225., and retain the etched lines only, as with the coarse pitch of .150" it will be quite obvious in assembling when the parts are a whole turn out of phase.
