x7773. To: Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.W.H. Hôtel de France, Châteauroux, Indre. 2/7/30. We have been held up during this morning owing to water being in the petrol. We found approx. 1 gallon of water in the tank, consequently we are having to check all the commercial spirit we are receiving, which we find is very dirty apart from the water already mentioned. The car came to a full stop with the float chamber and autovac practically full of water. You will notice in our Daily Report that the oil consumption is very poor, i.e. 421 M.P.H. The maximum temperature that the oil reached was 90°C. A fair amount of oil is lost from the rear bearing in the crankcase. We are also losing water from the radiator, this being thrown out, as we have not had any actual case of boiling. The loss of water is not due to the radiator being overfilled' The amount lost during a 250 mile run is working out at .750 gall. The general running of the engine is very smooth and is entirely free from any periods up to 60 M.PH. We then get a slight roughness at the period of the boom that we are aware of. Valve springs: We should very strongly advocate the return to our previous standard of valve springs, as these are noisy, both on acceleration and retard. I also learned from Paris that a car fitted with these springs had broken six of them, and from what I can make out in exactly the same fracture of our own valve springs which I have taken up with Mr. Bailey, who puts the fracture down to grinding | ||
