To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. TO Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}6/MJ.4.3.32. Re. Controllable Shock Dampers. Replying to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}8/E3.3.32. The scheme we are running on the 25 HP. car which PN.{Mr Northey} tried is an experimental mock up, and there is a considerable amount of design work especially as regards the controls. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and I have discussed this matter, and we have come to the conclusion that instead of dissipating our energies on a scheme which would not have a very long life, we should go all out with R's. scheme. The shock absorbers for J.3 are designed for controllable adjustment. There is no reason why this design of shock absorber cannot be used on Phantom 11 and 25 HP. We are therefore proposing to push a set of these shock absorbers in advance of J.3 car and arrange to fit them on to a Phantom 11. Although there are a certain amount of complications on the J.3 scheme, we are convinced that we shall arrive at a more satisfactory scheme quicker by developing the J.3 scheme rather than starting up on a temporary scheme which would still leave us in the position that the J.3 shock absorbers are being produced and would still have to be developed.
