26th Jan.,1925. A conference took place on Saturday morning, Jan. 24th. and there were present:- Messrs Elliott, Day, Stent, Bailey, Hives, Wormald, when the U.S.A. position was fully discussed. It was decided that design alterations to the present 4-speed box suitable were necessary, and experiments are taking place throughout the week-end, day and night, to find how much alteration will be necessary to this gearbox to make it right. With reference to new frame, it was considered, providing Mr.Royce agrees, that there was a possibility of using eccentric front springs that would avoid any alteration to the frame. Mr.Day is writing to Mr.Royce on this matter, to get his approval, or otherwise. It was also unanimously agreed, in order to try and save time, to propose to CJ. and R.{Sir Henry Royce} the advisability of going ahead experimentally:- (1) With the 3-speed gearbox, central change, suitable for front wheel brakes; (2) With the 3-speed box with right-hand change, suitable for four wheel brakes; (3) To proceed with modifications of design to the 4-speed box right-hand change, suitable for four wheel brakes. The reason for this decision was that if we work at all the three gearboxes as hard as we can, we could introduce into production any one of these that was first, providing it was agreeable to Sales and R.{Sir Henry Royce} It was also decided that in a month's time West WitteringHenry Royce's home town and Works ought to be able to say which scheme should be definitely put into production parallel with experimental work and the 10,000 miles trial. West WitteringHenry Royce's home town consider that in a month's time they should be clear with all their instructions. | ||
