re WATER PUMP.
----------

A comparison has been carried out between the Vauxhall 25 water pump and our latest B.80 pump to SCD.1398.

Photographs showing the component parts and a weight analysis are attached, and general conclusions appear to be as follows:-

1. The R-R pump comprises 15 pieces against the Vauxhall 10 pieces (one piece not shown). This is chiefly due to two items.

(a) Vauxhalls use a cast-iron casing eliminating the necessity for bearing block required when an aluminium case is used. This saves two pieces A & B.

(b) The sealed gland assembly was considered inadequate and was replaced by separate bearings, and this accounts for four extra pieces, viz. two bearings, a distance piece and a spindle.

Allowing for the above, the R-R pumps have basically one piece less than the Vauxhall design. An alternative design has been suggested incorporating a sealed bearing with this gland assembly, but we do not think that the cast iron bearing block can be omitted, if an alum. case is to be used. A cast iron case would be approximately 5 1/2 lbs. heavier.

2. The R-R pump is lighter than the Vauxhall, due to the cast iron case used on the latter.

3. The R-R rotor is 50% heavier than the Vauxhall, and somewhat more complicated. Also we use phophor bronze, where Vauxhall use cast iron. We propose to put a cast iron rotor in hand of lighter design, and should be glad if Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. would prepare a drawing.
