X 3898 To BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C.R. 2 copies c. to HOR. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG11.2.20. X3648 RE RADIATOR TUBES FROM AMERICA. X3893 With reference to Mr. Southern's memo Srm1/G30.1.20., we consider that we should cable them and tell them that any tubes they send over here for radiators should be, as near as possible, identical to those which are shown on our drawings and which we recommend. The tubes which Mr. Southern describes in his memo are totally different to what we are using. 1. They are 8 mm. dia. instead of 7 which is our standard. 2. They are made of copper instead of brass. We have had a radiator with copper tubes and wehave had trouble with them. It was agreed that brass was the best material. 3. The tubes have hexagon ends instead of round ends. This is another feature which Mr. Royce is against. Another point is that these will give the car a totally different appearance. It is quite against CJ's ideas that the American Car should have hexagon tubes in the radiator whilst the English Cars will have round tubes. Mr. Southern concludes his letter by saying that it is very important that they should have a report on these tubes as soon as possible. We think for this reason we should cable and tell them that we consider it a waste of time sending the proposed tubes especially as it appears from their letter that they have made no attempt to obtain tubes which comply with our specification. It should be made clear to them that if they require to know quickly that they can order up material, they should make every endeavour in the first place to obtain material which is identical to what we are using on the cars over here. If the American pieces are going to be treated in the same way as our pieces Contd, | ||
