X.4254 RE REAR UNIVERSAL COUPLING. X.4348

In accordance with your instructions we have made a scheme of a fixed universal joint, following the lines of the sliding joint shewn on LeC.1363. We send herewith a print of "N" Scheme 815 and "N" Scheme 815A.

On Fig 1 of 815 the bevel pinion is left solid with its shaft, as now, and the flange for carrying the universal joint is mounted in the manner formerly suggested by you for the original joint (on Sch 730). We find that in order to put this joint together, or take it apart, it is necessary to slide the sheet metal cover a certain distance back, and it will be necessary to mount the one fork on to the propeller shaft before the joint is assembled.

We thought this might be an objection, and so on 815A we have shewn a scheme which enables the joint to be built up separately, and then secured to the propeller shaft by using a box spanner through the star piece.

On Fig 2 of 815 we make an alternative suggestion for mounting the pinion on to its shaft by keys, and having the universal joint flange solid. We also shew on Fig 3 the jaw piece of the universal joint pulled up on a taper, in a manner similar to LeC.1363, as this appears to us to be rather better than the parallel scheme shewn on Fig 1.

Contd.
