To PN.{Mr Northey} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 17950 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/MJ.6.12.30. PHANTOM II BRAKES - ANTI SQUEAKING. With reference to PN{Mr Northey}2/PH3.12.30. We are disappointed that you have not had more Trials cars fitted up with this device. As we see it, you have not a single Trials car running about with these shoes on though it is admitted we are relying on you to give us information as to their behaviour in London traffic, etc. We suggest that the parts taken off 129-GN might at any rate have been fitted to a Trials Car, and there have been supplies of further parts at Cricklewood for the past three weeks. You will see that we are now in the position of having two London cars fitted with these shoes, 58-GN. and 26-EX, one of which is squeaking and one is not which is not a very satisfactory basis on which to standardise the device. Experimentally, however, we have obtained consistently good results but we know that we cannot produce conditions that are similar to those in London for producing brake noises. When you do try these shoes we should like you to note their behaviour first thing in the morning when the car is taken out. We find that under these conditions there is a tendency to 'snatch' which you should be aware of though we ourselves do not consider it is very serious.
