X.4383 - DYNAMO No.51 EX CHASSIS 439G.3.
-JOHNSTONE-

Reference your EY5/P2.4.24, we have now investigated this machine. It is certain that the dynamo has been overheated, as it has been necessary to re-solder the commutator connections.

We have since run the machine on the bench and it is all right with the exception that the appearance of the commutator does not seem to be as good as usual.

This may be partly due to two reasons:-

(1) The control brush is in EG2. Morganite. We do not know how this brush should have got on to production, and it should be changed to standard.

(2) This is one of the earlier machines and the location of the main brushes is not our more recently approved position. This should be altered if possible.

On receipt of the machine the commutator looked in a condition as if the machine had been run unloaded for a considerable time. There was also a washer between the armature and the pulley end bearing, and as a result of this one of the bearing screws was slightly fouling the oil thrower. In reassembling we have omitted this washer (which is not at present called for on the drawing), and so got rid of the fouling.

As received, we found the brush gear to be tight and generally O.K. with the exception of the points mentioned above. We therefore think the machine will be quite all right, if just overhauled and brought up-to-date by the Production Dept. before sending out again. EFC.
