Copy to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} for Bentley.

You will remember some former correspondence about this when the cost of the tools was given as about £1,000 and I raised the question of whether we ought to incur this expenditure in view of the fact that any modification such as moving the engine further forward would probably render the tools useless.

I see there is now a Standardisation Sheet, No.X.819, for the introduction of these on 'D' Series and the jig and tool cost is given as £771. and the saving per chassis as 16/4.

Before signing this I should like to know whether there is a likelihood of the 'engine further forward' alteration being introduced in the series after 'D'.

If not; it would at least give us a run of 400 chassis, although of course even then the saving would only be about £325 as against a jig and tool expenditure of £771.

It says on the Sheet that the reason for the introduction is reduced booming in the body and to save weight.

As regards the first, I was not aware that booming in Bentley bodies was a complaint, and on enquiry from C. who deals with the complaints this is confirmed.

As regards the saving in weight, I should like to know how much is involved.

What I have in mind is that recent things we have done to the Bentley such as introducing controllable shock dampers and various other items are gradually putting the cost up, and whilst on paper there is a nominal saving of 16/4 per chassis, the jig and tool expenditure has got to be paid for.

I should be glad if you would make further enquiries and let me know.
