X7772 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. OY-2 June 12th, 1929. Mr. E.W. Hives, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. CONFIDENTIAL Engine Suspension Dear Mr. Hives: In the prints which Mr. Bailey has rushed to us we are confused in our heads about one thing, namely the 5- point engine suspension. We do not have details yet of the suspension at the rear of the gearbox but gather that it is a fabric-lined "steady rest", allowing torsional movement but preventing vertical movement. It would appear at first sight as though the power-unit were well enough supported on its four "semi-flexible" feet, and the question arises whether the support at the rear of the gearbox really helps to support the power unit, or rather holds up the frame from the power unit. If you would give us a note telling why the fifth support was adopted, it would help us a lot. Very truly yours, ROLLS ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. r/ Maurice Olley | ||
