No. 107.

X 2628 RE. SQUEAKING REAR SPRINGS.

One of the weaknesses of the present thick leaf springs is that they are prone to squeak, and action has been taken for the bedding of the leaves to be improved.

We have already circulated in our sheet No.82 the importance of continued lubrication to the leaves of these springs, which can be applied externally by oiling the ends of the leaves.

In dealing with complaints on this matter, however, the following points should be brought forward:-

We recommend that the spring leaves should be opened occasionally, and Graphite grease inserted, but a quick and effective cure for this squeak can be obtained by applying a little lubricating oil round the ends of each leaf externally, the surplus oil being wiped off.

It may be found that the squeak again takes place after further running, when the operation can again be carried out, and we consider that the amount of lubrication required to overcome this squeak will gradually get less and less as the plates bed into each other.

We are now taking action with the makers to obtain an improved surface bedding between the spring leaves, the trouble at present being that if the load is taken locally, squeaking takes place.
