X.3720 RE FRONT END DETAILS OF 3/19 GEAR BOX.
40/50 H.P. AMERICAN CHASSIS.

We send you herewith drawing No. L&C.1175 in reply to the memo accompanying your M.Scheme 202.

In this scheme the original ball bearings have been retained for the first shaft in the gear box and the joint is made of equivalent strength to that on the present chassis by certain alterations in the design of the pin and the projection on the shaft carrying the pin.

An inspection of the standard universal pin shews that it is made with two undercuts separating the taper from the parallel surfaces. These undercuts are a source of weakness and loss of surface which, when eliminated by increasing the size of the taper on the pin slightly and finishing the inner ends of the parallel surfaces with radii, allows us to get an equivalent effect with a pin housing which will just pass through the bore of the ball bearing we wish to use.

This latter condition is obtained without loss of diameter, by using a split ring sunk into the shaft for an abutment against which a double nut is screwed to tighten up the ball bearing, and take the end thrust of the shaft.

This device requires serrations on the shaft, which are also obtained without loss of diameter. The duty of these serrations is to prevent the inner nut from turning when the outside nut, which is formed on the dynamo driving pulley, is rotated.
