X3603 Expl: Dept: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/LG. 21st. June 1928. Messrs. The Solex Carb. Co., Solex Works, 223-231 Marylebone Rd., London N.W.1. Dear Sirs, The 20 HP. RR. car fitted with the Solex Carburetter is now running on the road. Our impressions of the carburetter are as follows :- Slow running. This is very poor, strong, adjustment of air bleed does not have any effect. Full throttle performance. No appreciable difference from RR. carb: except at low speeds. Solex is slightly worse full throttle up to 20 m.p.h. Engine runs at full throttle from 10 m.p.h. upwards quite well, although one gets the impression of a very strong mixture. Small throttle openings. Between 20 and 30 m.p.h. there is a very weak spot, the throttle opening being just sufficient to drive the car on a level road. If the starting choke is closed slightly when this occurs, the running immediately improves. The 28 mm. choke was fitted to improve the impression of strong mixture - this was no good owing to the intensification of the 20/30 m.p.h. weak period and weakness at low speeds on opening throttle to accelerate - i.e. as in traffic. We should be pleased to see your Mr. Mantell any day next week. Yours faithfully, | ||
