Clutch judder in a Bentley and the prohibitive cost of fitting an anti-rattle synchromesh device.

261 (3) W/K.{Mr Kilner} To KC. from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}10/AP.3.1.38 I tried Dyke's Bentley yesterday, and it is unfortunate that his Son's is a later car which happens to have the anti-rattle synchromesh device fitted at 87 C.W. and which will undoubtedly prevent noise in his car. The clutch as a clutch seems reasonably good, and I do not think changing the lining will make any difference, as nothing would get rid of the rattle except the aforementioned device. I demonstrated to him that the clutch only appeared to judder when taking off between 700 and 900 revs and that it was possible above or below these speeds to get away without trouble. I did not hold out any prospect of making his car any better owing to the cost of fitting the anti-rattle device which is prohibitive. I hope, therefore, that he lets the matter drop.
