HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/VS.{J. Vickers}3.6.37.

Propeller Shaft LOP.G.82089.

Trunnions with hardened splines. Sliding joint fitted at rear.

All parts, including the sliding joint splines, were in excellent condition. The pins were magnetically crack-tested and failed to show any signs of cracks.

No oil had leaked out at the rear and all parts were well lubricated.

Spring Suspension LOP.G.83747 and Front Axle LOP.G.83342.

N.S.4593-4768. N.S.4756/7/8. Wraith II Wheel movement on Phantom III.

As will be seen on Ex.I.162/3/4 herewith, several faults have been shown up in the independent suspension.

The front crossmember top plate has cracked badly, and the dowel pins for the main spring housings were found to be sheared off.

The coiled bijur piping in the top fulcrum pin had fouled the bonnet strip on both sides of the car, the pipes being nearly chafed through. The pipe supplying the coiled pipe just mentioned had been trapped between the frame and the rear O.S. top lever, and the coiled pipes supplying the yokes had both broken off. These latter breakages must have been recent, as the bearings they supply had not worn badly through the lack of oil, although that on the N.S. was dry and rusty. In addition, the heads of the clamping bolts of the top triangle levers had fouled the bracket for the coiled pipe at the front, and the frame stiffener at the rear on both sides of the car. The outer main spring on the O.S. has fouled the housing slightly.

All of the top triangle levers were cracked and three of the bottom levers had small surface cracks.

The O.S. bottom rubber buffer had collapsed.

All these faults are shown, with piece numbers, on Ex.I.162, 3, 4 and 5.

continued.
