300a. GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/R.27.11.36. We are not proposing to send 35-EX to France until it is fitted with the modified pivots, which we expect to give improved steering. We have had endless trouble with the forgings of these levers, and they have not yet got a sound one to start machining. Therefore, I do not propose to bring 35-EX back from London until I can get a definite date for these pivots. I expect this will be at the end of next week, about the 5th December. In the meantime, if you are not already running on Mobil-arctic, I shall be glad if you will do so. Will you please check the oil consumption before and after the change of oil. Will you also please observe whether the crankshaft periods are any worse with the thin oil, and, furthermore, whether the engine becomes any more noisy. We are going ahead with 6-B-IV, and by the time 35-EX goes into the Shop it should be ready to start its tests. Attached is some correspondence relating to big end bearing failures. I shall be glad of any information you can get me on this subject. Also attached is RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}'s remarks on my suggestion that we ought to have loose liners in all our engines. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
