Re Sparking Plugs.

We have had a Lodge representative call at the Works and we have explained to him the troubles we have with the plugs. They seem to be aware of most of the difficulties and realise that they have by no means attained perfection.

Although the Lodge people have made a tremendous number of different types of plugs they seem to rely on their customers a good deal to test them, from what I gather they do not run plugs in engines to test them. They would be willing to build up any plugs embodying any of our own ideas for improvements.

Before the War the Lodge people were using exactly the same insulating material as the Bosch, they say there is nothing wonderful about the stuff except that it is very strong, which enabled them to fix the insulator in such a way that it would always remain gas-tight. The material relies on the glaze for its insulating properties. They say at first they had considerable trouble to get an English pot material to stand up but they consider now they have got it.

Mr Elliott is taking to Mr Royce a Lodge and a K.L.G. plug in pieces so that he can see the construction. The Lodge people say (and our tests agree) that all the troubles from pre-ignitions comes from the centre electro. On their plugs they have attempted to keep this cool by having a big cob of
