not less than 130, or Thomas Firth's FH steel, which requires heat treatment and subsequent quenching. We can give you the full details of these two materials if you decide to proceed with a design.

5). The normal method of fitting these glands in the case of designs such as Sketch No. 100/640 is by shrinking the carbon ring into the housing or holder. It is necessary to take the housing up to approximately 250°C and the bore should be made to a tolerance of .001"; suitable interferences can then be arranged so that the ring is firmly held under all conditions.

In the case of the design shown on our Sketch No. 100/1197, the question of driving the carbon ring arises, and in this case we have used both pin drives through the shaft as well as dog drives on the periphery of the carbon ring. The great advantage of this design is it's flexibility and freedom from the necessities of close working tolerances. The rubber which we have developed will withstand the normal conditions which one meets in automobile practice.

We feel that it is not possible for us to adequately explain the development of this gland by letter and we would inform you that our Mr. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} T. Sparkes who has assisted your Aero section - will be at Derby on the 23rd August. If this visit would be sufficiently soon to meet your requirements, we would be pleased if you would notify us and we will arrange for him to call upon you, when he can give you full details of the two types of designs.

Yours faithfully,

THE MORGAN CRUCIBLE COMPANY LIMITED
