In connection with improved high speed performance on P.II cars a meeting of the following cars was arranged at Brooklands and comparative performance figures were obtained :- 27-EX. Continental P.II fitted with 6.25:1 compression head with double valve springs; 1140 high lift camshaft and twin S.U. carburetter. (Standard RR carburetter and induction system was also taken with this car, the changeover being made on the track.) 34-GY. (FALCON) Fitted with 6:25:1 compression head with double valve springs standard camshaft and high lift rockers. (Standard RR carburetter.) 61-AL. Standard Continental P.II trials car. Particulars of lap speeds, flying half mile speeds and acceleration figures (for 27-EX only) are attached. In addition side by side acceleration tests were carried out which demonstrated very effectively the increase due to the high compression head and high lift camshaft or high lift rockers. Comparing 61-AL with 34-GY, the latter car, in spite of being 2cwt heavier has equal acceleration up to 50 m.p.h., gains approx 1 car length at 50 m.p.h. and 2 car lengths at 60 m.p.h. and its maximum speed is 7.7 m.p.h. greater over the 1/2 mile and 5.49 greater for the lap. 27-EX car when fitted with RR standard carb has an almost identical performance to 34-GY which is what should be expected. | ||
