Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X4117 BY7/G.13.11.30. QUARTERLY COMPLAINTS. -------------------- Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Eml/AD.12.11.30. and Mr. Hancock's note of the 10th inst. in regard to the two points raised we are going to recommend the fitting of the new spring without delay, but we do not agree that there is any essential difference in the bedding of the spring on the bottom whether it is the closed or open type coil, as obviously the re-action occurs as a moment off the last piece of free wire and passes straight across the coil to the opposite diameter. FILTER FOULING CROSS MEMBER. There are two issues :- a/- One in connection with the 40/50 HP. b/- One in connection with the 20/25 HP. In the case of the 40/50 HP. the designs were arranged to pre-mit the filter being removed, it is admittedly close, but if a spare wheel has been fitted away from the Works it is conceiv-able that the cross member might overlap the edge of the filter. The same thing would also apply on cars which we turned out early on, as you will remember there was an argument about the size of tyre and clearance which had been allowed by WW. for fitting the tyre between the cross member and the tank. We on our own initiative modified the spare wheel carrier and allowed more clearance, and therefore incidentally made the removal of the filter quite easy. In the case of the 20/25 HP. provision has been made for swinging the spare wheel carrier cross bar when it is necessary to take the filter out. We know that this is a somewhat big job, but it is a part of the original design to which we are committed. The removal of the bar is a difficulty, but it was a definitely necessary part of the scheme. It is only essential when the double filter is fitted on the 20 HP., but as in the near future we are going back to the double filter the same difficulty will occur, but we have a note on our drawings pointing this out and the instruction book will be altered.
