| RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} X228 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}4/KW.3.5.34. Gearbox for 5-B-IV. In the first Peregrine Gearbox fitted to 4-B-IV we have tried a very cumbersome sideshaft bearing consisting of a roller and double ball thrust bearing. We attach herewith a simpler scheme, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1381, showing the use of a new departure type bearing as employed by Packards. This bearing is adequate for the loads and considerably smaller. We should also like the 2nd and 3rd motion shafts to be made in S2NCR, as a failure at the sudden change in section of 3rd motion shaft is not unlikely and both shafts are very highly stressed. The 1st speed wheel should be .625 wide and in S2NCR. Will you please modify the box on 4-B-IV accordingly. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
