To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} c. to Na.{Mr Nadin} EFC8/T6.6.17. X. 3031 - MAGNALIUM METAL With reference to your memo R15/B2617, and further to ours EFC4/T15517, about the above metal, we have the following remarks from Mr. Kesterton - "We have only cast a lower half crankcase in this metal and should like enough to cast two top half crankcases, that is, at least 2 cwt." Presumably before he can give us any definite report. This was in answer to my note asking for information with regard to the comparative soundness and casting characteristics of magnalium metal as compared with crankchamber alloy. Mr. Kesterton also gave me the following particulars:- "Weight of bottom half crankcase in 2L5 alloy 1 qr. 1 lb. 0 oz. (To Admiralty specification) Weight of bottom half crankcase in present alloy 1qr.0lbs.3ozs. (Average of 12) " " " " Magnalium. 1qr.3lbs.0ozs. Specific gravity of 2 L 5 aluminium alloy 2.93. " " ordinary crankcase alloy 2.88 " " Magnalium 3.0 " It will be understood that the magnalium referred to above was from the sample obtained by Mr. Nadin, which we referred to in our previous reports, and cannot be Contd. | ||
