AMERICAN ENGINES. X3663
EPICYCLIC GEAR
PLANET WHEEL BALL BEARING.

Referring to Mr Hives report EH2/LG231018 on the sample Hessbright bearings, two of which have failed on test, the position in regard to the above is as follows:-

These bearings are not the special bearings which were ordered in the States with spigoted cages and in accordance with my cable of April 25th last, to be fitted with ten balls. The bearings in question were standard deep groove Hessbright bearings, fitted with steel cages, which were supplied by Mr Olley in the absence of the correct type, so that we might make some test of same with reference to their reliability.

When the bearings in question were delivered the above point was not made clear. I therefore at once cabled to America pointing out that these bearings were not in accordance with requirements I had previously definitely specified as necessary. Mr Olley replied stating that he was aware that they did not meet our specification and that they were not intended to do so, being merely the correct size of Hessbright deep groove bearing which he could buy standard and which he had therefore sent on to us that we might make reliability test in regard to same.
