an endurance run, but more with the idea of obtaining useful
information. We know what the conditions are on the plain
bearings and we could judge by their condition and the amount
of wear what the loads actually are. It looks as though
we have got to do something drastic as in spite of all the
various changes tried on these bearings, we have not yet been
able to find any bearing which is reliable.

We have fitted up the gear with another set of
ball bearings with spigotted cages. We are also using the
standard Hoffman ball with spigotted cage in place of the
Hess-Bright bearings. The reason these first bearings had
not spigotted cages, was that the Hoffman could not supply
them fitted, and we have had to make them ourselves. We
are sending the ball bearings which have run in place of the
roller bearings to Mr. Royce.
