If breakage of any part of clamp—which is extremely unlikely—ever occurs, remove and replace with suitable 1/4" bolt and nut until a replacement clamp assembly can be obtained. Removing Wheel It is only necessary to take out the circlip 'Q' in order to pull the wheel completely off column 'B', but before the circlip 'Q' can be got at, any central controls or other fittings must be first of all removed from wheel centre. Where a horn button only is used, this will be fixed to wheel top centre—NOT to column 'B'—in some probably quite evident manner, such as a spring fit insert, etc. After removing this horn button and disconnecting the wiring from bottom of steering box, the circlip 'Q' can be sprung out of its groove and the wheel removed. Where central controls, such as Horn, Dipper, Trafficator Signals (manual or auto-return) and, possibly, Ignition Advance and Retard or and all Lamps Switch Lever are fitted, the heads of the two grub screws 'O' will be seen opposite each other on the outside of hub 'A'; these should be unscrewed about 1/8" (it is not necessary to remove them entirely), when after disconnecting the wiring at bottom of steering gear box, the entire upper part of central control assembly, including bushing 'M' and upper half of control tubes with wiring, can be withdrawn from column 'B'. Care must be taken to see that wiring, when disconnected at bottom of steering box, is neatly arranged so that the whole cable can go through the column without resistance from loose wires, lumpiness due to insulating tape, etc., or trouble may be experienced in getting it right through the column. Any other screw heads on outside of hub 'A' should not be touched; they hold the auto-return trafficator trip plate and do not need loosening. When the controls are removed as described, the circlip 'Q' can be removed and the wheel pulled off the column 'B'. To replace, assemble the dust-cover 'J' with any cups, etc., as they came off the column; replace wheel and circlip—first oiling the splines; carefully thread the wiring cable back through the column—it may be necessary to introduce copper wire upwards through the box of steering gear and thus pull the cabling through—and very carefully introduce the tubing attached to controls and to bushing 'M' into column, turning the tubes until the telescopic joints half-way down are properly engaged. NO FORCE must be used. The tubes will slip into position with control head in some angular position as originally, with a little "feeling" and patience. Screw up the two screws 'O', after making sure the plate of bushing 'M' is properly down on its seating in hub 'A'. This is important. If it is not fully down, the screws 'O' cannot hold it properly; if there is doubt whether plate IS properly down, take out one screw 'O', edge of plate then can be seen through the tapped hole; upper edge should be about half-way across hole, or a little lower. Note that the lower halves of control tubes that are fixed at bottom of steering box, need not be disturbed and that as the upper parts are quite short, no difficulty owing to roof (if a saloon car) will be experienced in withdrawing them from column. When reassembling, oil the joints of control tubes and the felt washers or bearings of bushing 'M', in order to obtain sweet operation and minimum wear.
