X.6006. DYNAMO ARMATURE FAILURE ON CHASSIS 24-EX ON 10,000 MILE TEST.

In case misgivings should exist regarding the above failure as having been due to this machine being one of the high output Phantom dynamos (now being standardised), we should like to make it clear that the reason for the failure is not fundamentally due to the fact of the armature of this machine being of a different type to present standard, but to the fact that in the course of experimental work on these armatures it was necessary, in the case of the two armatures first produced, to move round the end connections one segment. Such an altered armature would not have been utilised except for the fact that it was the only one available and the likelihood of failure was comparatively remote.

In regard to actual details of the failure this was definitely due to a broken connection in the armature which constitutes sufficient original cause for the symptoms that we subsequently observed.

There is no reason to suppose that any other armature of this type now produced or to be produced will fail in a similar manner.

The above will finally satisfactorily answer Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}7/D29.7.30, cancel the explanation contained in the first paragraph of EFCL/ADL2.8.30 and answer the recent note FN10/WT21.8.30.
