Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, MAGNUM STRAIGHT-SIDED WIRED ON TYRES. In reply to yours of the 20th inst. and with further reference to ours of the 11th inst., we beg to say that while we share your anxiety regarding a definite date when we shall be in a position to supply you with wire wheels fitted with straight-sided rims of our own manufacture, we are at the moment unable to fix this with absolute certainty. Our new rim plant for S.S. rims has been delivered, but we found that owing to sea water having entered the cases in transit, all the machines have had to be pulled down and practically re-built. We have now one or two machines coming into operation, and hope within the next few days to produce some specimen rims. Should our first attempts in this direction be entirely successful, we should probably be able to commence delivery in about four weeks, but as is generally the case with new processes, some little experiment involving the alteration of tools,etc., may be found necessary. In this case we do not think it would be safe to give you a definite delivery date under two months. We are earnestly hoping that this extension of time will not be required in bringing our plant into production, but we think it advisable in both our interests not to cut the period too short. We shall be glad to hear that this is agreeable to you, and that it fits in with your manufacturing programme.
