To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} From En. COPY c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}19/W20.8.19. RE CHANGING TYRES ON RIMS. X.3548✓ X.1019 With reference to Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}6/CB5.8.19. I was afraid the Michelin Co. would not be very interested. When this matter was discussed in London with Mr. Royce the general conclusion was that we should not be definitely against the fitting of Warland Rims, but at the same time we could not recommend them, and that our policy should be to bring about an improvement in the facility* with which tyres can be changed in the garage. The detachable wheels render tyre changing on the road a comparative rarity which hardly warrants the adoption of comparatively unsatisfactory collapsible rims etc., and the possible spoiling of the general excellence of the simple rim and tyre in order to overcome the occasional, but very awkward, job of changing the tyre of the road. It was agreed that with this in view we should endeavour to obtain a satisfactory wheel holding bracket or stand for garage tyre changing. Mr. Hives has endeavoured to do so, but could not find anything suitable. Will you please go into the matter in conjunction with Mr. Hives, and prepare designs for a stand in order that we may make a sample and try it with a view to arriving at a really satisfactory article.
