contd:- -3- not previously tried the car. I also took up with Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} the question of - what had been done to 81-TW - which you will remember was reported that the vibrations had been overcome by taking up the end play in the crankshaft. He reported that the main journal bearings were taken up at the same time as the end play. We consider it is unlikely that the torque re-action vibration or impulses of the engine could be improved on three different cars by three different remedies. Our own opinion of 107-MG and 20-UG is, that they would not be described as silky-running cars, or that they gave one the impression of being blown along. These cars have been expressly made to Sales Dept. demand. They are high-compression cars fitted with open bodies and 14-tooth axles. The acceleration, as one would expect, is terrific compared with pre-war cars. One could not gain much useful information as regards BJ's complaint of vibration in London because there were not two opinions of cars which agreed. PN.{Mr Northey} and H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} whom we have looked upon as the best critics and Officials in the closest touch with buyers and users, were not in agreement with the policy of dropping the high compression for open cars. This does not mean that they consider the cars free from vibration. Ten years ago PN.{Mr Northey} was returning cars to the Works because of this complaint, but they consider, as there must be a compromise, the high compression car makes the best car for a large number of buyers. The experimental records show that relative to the number of cars delivered, we had more complaints of vibration on the contd:- | ||
