MARLES TYPE STEERING.

I visited Messrs. Adamant Eng. Co., on Friday the 27th instant to acquaint Comm.Matravers personally of the delay in production that was occasioned by the break in supplies, also of the various defects existing on cams when received here.

The last three batches of ~~25/30~~ Cams received have been very unsatisfactory the errors being as follows.

1). Roller track irregular in contour and a tendency to slack in centre and tight at approximately 45 degrees of rotation of steering wheel either side of centre.

2). Key approximately .003" small.

Out of 24 received we have been compelled to reject 7 for these defects.

Comm.Matravers was aware of the error in roller track, (they have now got their testing rig in commission) but have not yet found why some cams come off the machine fairly satisfactory, and others unuseable. I say fairly satisfactory because there is no margin of safety on any cams as cut, for subsequent errors in hardening and machining, and I again proposed they should try cutting on eccentric arbor to allow the required margin.

At the moment they are rejecting approximately 33% off the cutting machine.

I stressed the necessity of overhauling the tackle for holding the cams during broaching to avoid the small keys, because the cams are being held out of square slightly during these operations.

The broach is also having attention to remove the tendency to shave the sides of key.
