PETROL CONSUMPTION ON 18. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} IV.

Your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rnll/KT 2.6.33. received. The standard carburetter was not brought out with us. This was handed over to Dean after we had carried out comparative tests, which gave no difference in the petrol consumptions. We ran for over a week here with the air silencer taken off and sent you a report stating there was practically no difference in the consumption on or off. The air valve on this carburetter has been too tight and has been partially seizing with heat expansion. We have carefully set the carburetter and freed the air valve which may give us slightly better results. The car when over here last had 19" wheels.

PETROL FILTERS
We found it necessary to clean the filter this morning, after 8.700 miles, not because of a definite stoppage, but lack of acceleration the carburation being weak. The bottom of the filter container was covered with sand. The filter discs were covered on the outside with fluff and dirt. It was surprising that the car had not been held up. The results show that the small filter in the Autovac is unnecessary.

DAMPERS
The result of yesterdays run was as follows:
Front dampers, weep from glands continued. The amount of loss was not measurable, but the leak spreads over the outside of the dampers and gives a deceptive appearance. The Near Side Rear was leaking and had lost 20 cc. in the days run. The Off Side showed no leak. The near side becomes much hotter than the rest of the dampers because of its close proximity to the exhaust silencer. We have, however, had more leak from the Off Side Rear (before we altered it) due to its getting more work to do, running in the gutter. (near side over here). W. Bell decided last night to try our scheme (N°2) on the N.S. and this was carried out. The N.S. front was also changed and the damper he brought out was fitted. The large top cover was fitted to the N.S.R. yesterday noon, with no better results for the 250 miles.
