Experimental Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mths.{Reg Matthews}1/JH. 9th August, 1937. Messrs. Hepworth & Grandage Ltd., St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} John's Works, Bradford, Yorks. For the attention of Mr. N.C. Brearley. Dear Sirs, Many thanks for your letter of the 19th of July which arrived during our holiday period hence the delay in replying. We are sorry that there has been such a mix up with the rings but the idea of analysing after test does not appear to be very satisfactory, for instance we might possibly get all the same rings in an engine and the test would be useless. We can say that the rings have not been disturbed from their original boxes, and if you could give us the analysis of the rings in each box we think it would be perfectly safe. You could test a few rings out of each box and would then get a reliable analysis, which we think would be better than analysing the rings when removed from the engine. It would also help us if you could put an identification mark on the rings, say one file mark on the inside for the normal rings, and two for the high Phosphorus-Molybdenum rings. It would help us to know which rings we were testing beforehand as each engine must have a complete specification of parts fitted, so that should the engine be stripped for inspection away from the Derby Works full particulars are available for these concerned. Yours faithfully, | ||
