REAR ENGINE MOUNTING - PEREGRINE.
---------------------------------

We recently investigated the 60 V.P.H. engine period on Peregrine turning the engine over through the rear wheels by drums driven from an independent source. We found that we were able to eliminate the effect of the roughness on the occupants of the car by holding the back of the engine up on jacks.

We asked G.T.Hancock to carry out a confirmatory test in France by supporting the cross member (which holds the rear of the engine unit) on rubber blocks in the frame. He was not able to use very large pieces of rubber, but reported a 50% improvement in the engine period of which we complained.

We therefore believe that flexibility in the rear engine support of Peregrine will be a definite advantage in obtaining a smooth power unit and should like an approved design to test.

We admit that when we were investigating the boom on the Phantom we repeatedly tried a rubber mounted rear engine support without success, but this appears to be a somewhat different trouble in that it can be felt rather than heard.
