Re Iron Castings - Your Ref.
RL/M23.5.28.

----------------

Our experiments indicate that additions of Nickel and Chromium in the ladle are liable to cause trouble when casting complicated jobs such as cylinder blocks.

The use of Nickel alone, added with the charge, has been suggested. For thick castings, however, Nickel plus Chromium would probably be [strikethrough]more[/strikethrough] advantage from the strength point of view, especially if the composition of the iron was carefully controlled.

By a simple addition of Nickel and [handwritten insert: or nickel alone] [strikethrough]Chromium[/strikethrough] to the iron we are now using, the tensile strength would not be very much increased, though the grain, transverse test result and resistance to wear would be considerably better.

Increase in tensile strength could be obtained by the heat-treatment of castings, where some distortion is unimportant.
