| Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} C. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C. EY. C. MD. from Sft.{Mr Swift} Sft.{Mr Swift}1/EMG.30.5.35. Re Chassis B-34-AH. Phillipson. With reference to memo' Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson}2/KW.24.5.35., we have noted the contents of this memo' and we are aware of the need for accurate balancing of these units. In par. 1 of your summary you remark as follows:- "understand that a number of fans got through unbalanced i.e., similar to the one tested". We would point out that the period during which the unbalanced fans were made was of two weeks duration and occurred in April 1935, whereas the fan in question, from Chassis B-34-AH, was built, fitted and despatched in Feb. or March 1934. Whilst we admit that in April 1935, we discovered a workman who was not strictly carrying out instructions, we had, during the period February 1934, when the fan under review was made, a workmen employed on this unit who would, no matter what the cost, make the fans as accurate as skill and the tools at his disposal would enable him to do so. Despite this, however, the Experimental Department report that the fan in question is 7 1/4 gramms out of balance. We cannot of course dispute this although we firmly believe it was balanced as perfectly as we know how. We would however be interested to learn how the out of balanced condition of this fan has been checked, as it is the practice of the Experimental Dept. to send to us all their fans to be balanced after building up, and we have no recollection of this fan being sent to us for balancing since its return from the customer. We would point also that this fan was made during the period when we were changing all fans, both in the Works and from depots as per instructions BY/CS6/EH.18.1.34, i.e., for stronger rivets. We would suggest that this fan be sent to us for our examination. In conclusion we would state for your information that we are definitely making arrangements to obtain a dynamic balancing machine.
