E to R who has further thoughts on his "simple" inexpensive starting handle.

DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} for more protection for the lower end of the (b) contd. housing against mud and dirt which may accumulate. The spring should be protected by riveting on a suitable flange. The amount should be sufficient to ensure sideways for the hexagon, and the bush should allow more clearance than shown on the drawing. see addenda.

(a) The starting shaft we now wish to make of weldless steel tube with suitable clamps brazed on for the handle and for the end to engage the starting ratchet. It is of fundamental importance that the handle as designed could be made in 1 of 2 ways and be interchangeable.

(b) As indicated, the starting handle could be made up from steel castings, the handle being rivetted on. The castings should be ribbed as indicated.

(Y) It is recommended at some stage that the starting handle be manufactured by riveting to the hexagon portion, as herein before.

The starting portion can also be made from a steel pressing and the handle can be either rivetted or rolled over. This same design can also be used to protect against dust and mud.
