Report re my visits to various electrical firms during last week - SATURDAY - at Messrs. Lucas, Birmingham. I managed to get a glimpse of their Bakelite Moulding process which is, however, only in the experimental stages. What I did see will be most useful to me in deciding what class of work it is possible to get from this material and should be pleased if you will instruct C.O. to obtain some of the Bakelite powder, so that I can commence mould making. Mr. Breeden has kindly offered to let me look around their press tool shop at any time, so if you have no objection to me spending a day there, I will make arrangements with him. MONDAY - at Messrs. S. Smith, Cricklewood. I saw nothing of any importance to interest me as far as electrical equipment production was concerned. They use the standard method of winding but have a very fine press tool department, which was however almost stopped owing to slackness of work. They are mainly busy on Speedometer work which is, of course, too small for us to tackle. TUESDAY MORNING - at Messrs. Rotax, Willesden Junction. I notice in making their armature plates they use notching machines. I am not certain that this method is cheaper than our own, and it is certainly not such a good job, and moreover, the slots require trimming with a file afterwards. We are trying to keep files off our job. These people aredoing none of their own moulding, excepting a few rubber articles. Contd. | ||
