TUESDAY AFTERNOON - at Messrs. Fermens - Willesden Junction.

Although this place was not included on our programme I thought it advisable to go there, if only to urge material which I know we are wanting. I was not allowed around his works but saw several samples of his work in brass and alum. With regard to the former they assure me that the dies will keep their size and form for an indefinite period. I notice he is making a brass die casting of the valve port plug. I suggest casting the thread on so that the job needs no machining at all. The end of the thread could be left square similar to a secrew gauge which would make it easier to mould. Die castings will not pay unless we get every farthingsworth out of them that we can. I also noticed a small lever he is making & U.1194. I suggest this should be made as a pressing and not die cast.

WEDNESDAY MORNING - at C.A.V. Acton Vale.

We did not get around their works excepting their Battery Department, but I noticed on an Arrangement Drg. in the office that they secure their Armatures and Commutators to the shaft by knurling. I do not agree that this method is good unless it is possible to get a perfectly straight knurl and slightly taper. As a matter of fact, the C.A.V. motor strikes me as being a particularly "Jerry" job.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

On instructions from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} we went to Messrs. Crompton of Chelmsford, who are making a Moulded Commutator. However, the gentlemen we went to see was not there and we were unable to see their place. I do not think we shall get any information or assistance from this firm.
