X441. RE EXHAUST CUT-OUT SEATING.

With reference to your scheme N.368, would you kindly note that it was not Mr. Royce's intention when he instructed the straight cutting through of the pipe to make the exhaust cut-out flange stand on the flat face. This flange should fit on the circular outside diameter of the pipe, The difficulty then with regard to sweeping the metal round the end bosses should disappear, and there will be no necessity for fitting the stamping lengthways into the aperture in the pipe. This latter is not considered desirable from a welding point of view, as it is thought that to get the best welded joint and avoid burning away the thin edge of the pipe when supplying heat to the heavy stamping, the pipe material should lap underneath the stamping as shewn at "X" on blue print.

Mr. Royce would like reduced hexagon nuts used for the bolts to enable the stamping to be widened, this widening being specially for the purpose of providing clearance for the drilling and tapping of the end bosses.

In accordance with Mr. Royce's wishes, would you kindly incorporate these points and proceed.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
