Bailey - Chief Engineer}(struck through) Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.1/HP.20.8.36. Phantom III Rear Springs and Bushes. --------------------------------------- In connection with the ordering of rear springs for the second 200 Phantom III production chassis, it was agreed at a meeting between By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} that these should be of the rolled eye type, and with metal bushes as shown on LeC.5086, so as to be converted if required later to the rubber bush shewn on LeC.4939. The latter scheme requires a ferrule to be forced into the rolled eye of the spring and spun over to provide a solid abutment in the centre for the rubber bushes. The rubber bushes have to be approximately 1/8" smaller on the outside diameter than those used with the Cadillac scheme. It should be understood that production chassis are already fitted with a suitable spring bracket and pin for rubber bushes. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} will take immediate steps to get 35-EX converted to LeC.4939. With regard to the spring layout, this should be ordered on the second 200 chassis to R.R. Sch.934. 35-EX already possess complies with this scheme. The risks in ordering up production as in the aforegoing are two, firstly the rolled eye, and secondly the lubrication layout on the spring to R.R.934. With a pipe passing up the length of the spring and anchored at the outer end a failure has been experienced on a 20/25 HP. spring similarly equipped. To anticipate any trouble likely to arise from this cause Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} will arrange to put a chassis on bump test, and this will be additional to the road test in France on 35-EX, and will also in both cases act as a test for the rolled eye. It is understood that if there is any question of converting customers cars in the future to rubber bushes it will be necessary to drop the spring and fit the ferrule into the rolled eye. This complies in general with the policy agreed at a conference in Derby with Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
