YOUR REF

20th February, 1939.

W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, Esq.,
Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd.,
Derby.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

I very much regret not having had the opportunity of seeing you at your Works on Thursday last, but I saw Mr. Harvey Bailey and Mr. Salt and discussed with your people the raised centre crown piston.

It certainly looks very promising, and as there are quite a number of engines on the market which use a combustion chamber in which this method of raising the crown may be applied, it does seem that there is scope for such a piston on the market, but there will be one or two points to clear up, as I am assuming that the bearing loads will also go up. However, these are points which all require to be looked into and should present no serious difficulty.

I was talking to Mr. Newton over the 'phone this morning, and he mentioned a discussion with you on the subject of "L" section rings, and at the same time Mr. Walden, our General Manager, has passed over to me the letter which you have written to Mr. Howlett, who is away for a week or more. On the subject of "L" section rings, we have been supplying for two years, as you may be aware, quite a large number of these particular rings to Leyland. We also use them on our own Welflex Pistons, and we supply them in other directions where required, and the ring is mentioned on our wall chart, copy of which I have sent you, so that you will see we do mention the ring where we think it is going to do a good job of work.

On the other hand, you will find from your Aero Engine
